Honorwas Homer's greatest strength and his greatest weakness. It cuts both ways.

It may have been his relationship with his coal mining father (wonderfully played by Chris Cooper). His loyalty to his dad and love of family may have impeded Homer (the gifted Jake Gyllenhaal) from being more proactive in his desire for knowledge.
By the way, this is a wonderful film.
