How can tolerance of race, religion, etc. in the United States be a bad thing?

I have to write a paper for English, and I need to say why tolerance can be a bad thing, and I need examples if possible.

More specifically, it's supposed to be if tolerance goes too far, it becomes a bad thing. How?

Tolerance would mean that we'd have to look at class distinctions. You see, in America, race is a proxy for class.

And once you've removed the proxy as being an issue, you're left with just class distinctions - and that's a much tricker problem to solve. Millions of people have died in the last century trying to solve that problem.

Increased violence: statistically blacks are much more likely to engage in crime than whites, so whites tolerating blacks moving in should brace for increased crime in their neighborhood.

Tolerance of homosexuals: male homosexuals/bisexuals have HIV at a disproportionate rate relative to others, and they spread this virus quite quickly due to their promiscuouity.

I think tolerance of differences is a good thing, what I think is wrong is when one mistakes kindness for weakness. That is the big issue.

um... I don't really understand how it can be... even from the most bizarre of perspectives...

Some extremists might try to say stupid crap about how if we are too accepting then we risk allowing too many bad elements. However it must be noted that those are the same people who insist that all gay people are child molesters and anyone who isn't married and popping out babies left and right are undermining the strength of our country.. (you know the same sorts of attitudes that preceded WWII, in Germany).
