It certainly does not make you emo to continue prepetuating today's stereotypes of "emo".
Emo was a music genre years ago; it's had some revivals now and then but for the most part does not exist today. What people today call "emo music" is usually some sort of pop-punk or hard rock.
The stereotypes of "emo kids" being suicidal (cutting themselves, writing poems/songs about how they hate life) are all made up generalizations of otherwise messed up people.
Today, people who call THEMSELVES emo are just wannabes.
Also today, there are many things referred to as "emo" that are actually what is more accurately called "scene". This includes girls with short, choppy, two-toned hairstyles, or guys wearing girl pants. "Scene kids" are not labeled as suicidal or depressed, and are actually rather cheerful and enthusiastic once you can see them from the inside of the culture.

Being depressed and writing corny poetry has nothing to do with being emo. Teen angst existed long before emo did. I think if anything, emo attempts to embrace this raw emotion and build it into something constructive. Bands didn't become popular and the scene didn't develop while everyone was sitting around feeling sorry for themselves...
People took a proactive approach to develop a genre of music and a surrounding culture that stressed the importance of self-discovery and growth through emotional acceptance in a time when everyone either bottled up their emotions or just unleashed misguided anger. It stresses a point of personal responsibility and inner-strength.
It is sad that so many emo kids believe its about being depressed and cutting yourself, because that's a stereotype that the media created out of their own ignorance to the subject.
