As blueolbo has said it is from Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles) by Suzanne Collins. It is a strong fantasy series for children (8-12 yrs old). Gregor, the likeable main character, is just trying to help his family keep it together after his father has gone missing. Then one day he's down in the basement doing laundry with his little sister, Boots, when they fall through a grate in the wall and end up in the underground world of the Underland. There they encounter a world peopled with fantastic creatures - talking cockroaches, bats, rats, and a strange race of humans that retreated underground centuries ago. Gregor is believed to be the central figure in a series of prophecies that send him on fantastic adventures. Though regular fantasy readers may wince at the overused trope of prophecies and 'chosen ones.
