I adore airports.
I don't think they feel lonely at all unless you're there late at night dropping someone off and you walk across the empty halls and gaze at all the closed shops with a nostalgic type of feeling, remembering the time you were about to go on a trip and swore that someday you'd go inside that store but never did. The coffee shop that's closed and you wonder why anyone would close a coffee shop in an airport. Isn't that so stupid? Wouldn't coffee take the dull ache of the departure you just had to endure? You sort of don't want to look back at the gate where it feels like you just dropped off a piece of your heart. But you end up looking back and your eyes kind of tear up but you shake your head, vowing never to cry over something so stupid... And then just before you walk through the doors, you stick your hands deep in your pockets as if you're trying to find a bit of your sanity left...But contrary to what you want, you look back one last time... you take a deep breath, let it out, and then turn and walk through the doors. Into the cool night.... And you wish you could run back, get on the plane, and fly off into the stars. But you can't. And before you know it you're on the highway heading home listening to music and you put it as loud as possible, louder than you can usually stand, just to block out the constant rumbling of your thoughts.

I love airports. This will sound bananas, but I love the smells. Plus I've always wanted to stand on the bagage-claim-moving-thing. ?... anyway, I'm usually with family whenever I've gone, so they don't seem so lonely to me. I guess it's because I've grown up traveling everywhere and usually had a darn good time. Except that one time I threw up after a long plane ride... but perhaps another story for another day.

Because nobody is really there.....it is an Out of Time, a place where people are just passing through. Personally I love them, because I love to observe people. Your question, however, made me think of the movie 'The Langoliers' ~ you should check it out sometime :)

I feel this way sometimes when I watch joyous reunions at arrival gates or sad farewells at departure gates. It makes me yearn for the passion sometimes.
