How long will it take to grow back? Basketball season is about to start up, what should i do to protect it and prevent this from happening again?

I had a bacterial infection in my big toe nail and it fell off it has taken 6 months for it to grow back to where I can be comfortable wearing open toed shoes. make sure that you protect it really well it hurts like a motherf***** when you hit it the slightest little bit!!!

my dad played volleball a it came off a little bit and he wanted the pain to go away so he pulled it off it didn't bleed it just came off.
