As of such and such a date all TV stations in the US will be required to broadcast in HDTV. This applies to TV signals broadcast over the air and not cable or satellite. Cable and satellite operators are not subject to FCC rules and there is no telling what they might do. When the switch is final every single NTSC TV receiver in the US that only receives broadcast television will be a worthless piece of garbage overnight.

The idea is not to have two broadcast standards, but to phase-in a switchover to HD. NTSC is on the way out. If you keep your old TV it will be like trying to play an old 45rpm record in a DVD player; it simply won't work.

No. You're confusing digital TV with HDTV. If you get a decoder box, you don't need to care. The decoder box will allow any TV with an antenna plug to show the TV shows from 2009 onward.

However, if you have a TV band radio, or TV with no cable jack (Jensen MR-400's and such), WILL go out of usability in the TV bands.

I believe that eventually you will have to have it because the system format is going to change. I don't have it yet either but I will be considering a purchase as soon as my finances will allow.

Peace,

Hope
