In an interview with George Stephonoplous on ABC, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware, the incoming Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he would vote for Robert Gates as
Secretary of Defense (despite having opposed him for CIA Director in 1991) because (basically) he's not Donald Rumsfeld. Interestingly enough, Biden was a first term Senator when President Ford appointed Rumsfeld Secretary of Defense in 1975. How did he vote in that confirmation process? (For that matter, how did Biden vote in 2001?)

Couldn't find thomas.loc.gov; tried the link, but got an error message. You're referring to Clarence Thomas, I presume? I remember that Biden was against him for the whole Anita Hill thing, which was really a red herring designed designed to derail the nomination of a truly excellent jurist; I didn't agree with Thomas then, but I think God now that the liberal lynch mob failed.

Okay, I was wrong with the last comment--I found the Thomas page, and clicked on the link for roll call votes, but they only go back to 1990. Still no answer for my question...

This is an interesting question. I have searched the Library of Congress site for answers and have not found them.

Here is a link to Thomas showing that there was a voice vote:
