new socket the wall switch didn't work. So I clipped the connection between the top socket and the bottom socket. Now master bedroom lights only work when clipped socket switch in spare bedroom is in the "on" position. What did I do wrong?

what you did wrong(and many many others do sadly) is perform electrical work thinking its easy .....there are soooo many ways to wire things but to do it right AND safe only one way...I am betting...the outlet(socket as you refer to it?) was fed with the 110volts..and the old outlet was clipped between top and bottom...with the top being always on, and the bottom being refed thru light swith to switch on and off the bottom half of the outlet...

I would have to look at it.. I have change many many sockets and switches but something you are not telling me... the original wall socket.. was it an outlet or a switch? or was it just an outlet that was controlled by a switch on the entry way to the room? Some unknowns that make it difficult to know what you did.... ALSO.. IS THERE MORE THAN one switch that controls the light? If there are.. then the switch you got was for ONE light only and should have been for a two-way system.. I just do not know what you did... SO.. Here is what I would do... definitely.. I would go to your local home depot(electrical dept) and find someone there who KNOWS what the heck electricity is about.. tell them what you did and hopefully they can ask the right questions and you can draw it out for thelm and come up with the solution..

Did everything work right before you clipped the connection between top and bottom, and also did you replace the wires in the exact location on the old receptacle. You may have to put a jumper back between the top and bottom. This is kind of hard not knowing how many wires and their colors in that box., but go back to when you know everything worked and try again, otherwise email me at thunder_wright@yahoo.com and Ill see if I can help

Mommy you cannot do electrical without a ten dollar volt meter. You will now have to draw your room wiring on paper and find where the feed comes to the room. Sometimes a trip to the basement will help. Only then can you solve the puzzle. Some mad ex husbands know tricks.

your power to the socket is taken from the lighting circuit, not a mains ring. call an electrician

Sorry, as stressed, in case you position a dimmer on the gentle, the plug will actually have the dimming effect. AND, the dimmers pictured contained in the residing house Depot web page are purely dimmers...the swap area turns off the dimming circuit!
