Russia was allied with Serbia which had been threatened after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand by the Austro Hungarian Empire. Russia stepped in to back up the Serbs which caused the Germans to back the Austro Hungarians and the rest fell into place.

Russia was suffering the post war trauma of the Napoleanic wars as well as all of that world was in need of the change of the Old world order. As the French revolution had an extreme impact on Europe and Asia. Russia was starving for land and food, this was a good opportunity to get the Ukaraine back and an ally with the Austrian-Bulgarian governments with Germany as well, for Poland was created and that was a problem for they had a Union for workers. The politically minded muslims that tended to lure the Turks was an end to justify the means for the Russian, for they were of the Finnish descent and their parties were heavily separated by the Unions, Socialist and the old monarch's etc. So they fought the battles with their original allies, France, Italy, England, Ottomans, etc. and gained a few others on the way plus a little more jurisdiction in lands and trade. They actually only became heavily involved after the assassination of Ferdinand the Arch-duke of Austria. The fact that Woodrow Wilson sent our notice that there was too much military power over Germany, Austria , Russia, was only half right (the Black Hand) the creation of the Mafia was Frederich the Great an underhanded fellow, and hired the Sicilians to do his dirty work thus started the beginning of the Mafia. These were all key factors. Chaos is a real benefit for those who have no scruples or morals and just have the need to win as it is in Russia today, their Russian Mafia is feared globally as is any other organized threat fascist governments etc.
