The cost of living in the U.S. varies tremendously depending on where you live. Those living on either coast would think you are getting off really cheaply. I live in the midwest, where its a lot cheaper. Here's the breakdown for my family of 4 in a 4,500 sf house.
$150 per month electric summer
$30 per month gas summer
we don't pay for local tv programming
$35 standard cable
$30 broadband
$60 per month for gasoline (minivan)
$60 per week shopping for 2 adults and 2 kids
1 gallon milk = $2.25
1 loaf of bread = $.79
Your taxes have a lot to do with the high prices you pay.

Sounds about on par. Sorry, too tired to give a complete breakdown, but it is a little more expensive in the UK.

Other things depend on many factors. For instance, I live in South Texas and its very hot here.

I pay about 250.00usd in the summer, but I live in a house which is somewhat drafty.

Approx 300.00 in the winter.

60.00 USD For crap cable TV which includes regular local channels.

45.00US for high speed DSL internet.

Petrol in gallons down to 2.00 per gallon.

I dont have much of a commute, I dont have any kids. I'm sorry I dont have time to do the conversions.

I love the UK I hope to see more of it someday.

It's expensive, but even more so if you are paying in dollar amounts. Hope you have a good income to support this kind of living.

you would have to compare the job you do to a similar one in various places in the US. the costs of living in the US vary greatly.

as far as TV goes youre getting ripped off.

The U.S complains about the cost of living and everyone does. It is things we have to put up with . Nothing we can do.
