Peole I know who have emigrated have taken aprox 18 months from applying to getting their visas, including medicals, police reports etc

Depends upon the type of emigration visa you are applying for and the country from which you are applying.

Contact the Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate where you are supposed to apply and ask them the processing time.

although it does depend on what circumstances you're moving under.
my friends application only took 8-9 months but he had an australian partner.
my other friend was in her forties had dependant children and no skilled trade, so it took them over a year.and they got refused once.
