Not being funny, but there seems to be an awful lot of woman that get pregnant when using the pill and they swear they have taken it properly and not been on medication etc... Now, call me a skeptic, but I'm sure that when I read the instructions the pill is nearly 99% effective if taken correctly so how come about 70% of the people I know pregnant/or with babies got pregnant whilst on the pill? Either their little fibbers or doctors had better be investigating this new (scary) effective rate of the pill. Anyone get what I'm saying here?

I have noticed this too, also with the contraceptive injection, 2 of my friends claim they got pregnant while on the injection.
It is either an awful coincidence or, like you say, they have not been following the instructions properly.
Its also amazing how many women dont know that antibiotics, vomiting or diarrhoea can stop the pill working properly so maybe this could be to blame?

So is the Pill safe? Basically, yes. But very occasionally, it can have serious side-effects, which we’ll deal with in a moment.

For that reason, most doctors do not think that it should be ‘dished out’ to absolutely everyone, without any need for a prescription.

So when you want to start on the Pill, you should see a doctor (or Family Planning Nurse) and have a short check-up.

It's so easy...just do a web search....

I became pregnant whilst on the pill. I'm 31 years old, not a potentially irresponsible teenager. I followed the instructions to the letter, taking the pill at the same time every day. I had not illnesses, no anti-biotics and never EVER missed a pill.

These things happen.

Well my own mother got pregnant while on the pill - so here I am :-)
As everyone else has stated nothing is 100% effective except abstinence.
My husband and I were using TWO forms of birth control when I became preganant with my eldest child so... I know that for a fact!
Also it depends on the woman's genetic make up . I had been given birth control pills to control bleeding issues and my doctor warned me that I could still get pregnant.

The pill is 99.9% effective under "perfect use" however the actual failure rate among women is about 2.15 - 8.0% which means 2.15-8 women out of 100 will get pregnant each year.

However apparently people have stopped learning anything to do with sex ed so umm I doubt people are taking the pill properly. And they aren't telling their doctor/pharmacist they are on the pill and are taking medications (prescription or otherwise) that are lowering the effectiveness of the pill.

Also we all forget pills once in a while and some women consider it taking it properly as long as they take the pill eventually.

Though as you say, it's supposed to be 99% effective, there is always the 1% chance. If you try 100 times at the right time, maybe you could hit that 1%.

Otherwise though, you do hear about people swearing they're on the pill and not really being on it. Or being on the pill and not following instructions, though they swear they do.

When they say its 99% effective, that is based on a certain number of people tested over a certain length of time, 1 out of every 100 couples got pregnant in the tests.

There are stories that people get pregnant on the pill AND using condoms, so yes of course its possible. Plus if your friends are doing it several times a day, rather than the apparent average of twice a week, then of course they are more likely to conceive.

Asides from that, some people are just more fertile than others.

I do get what you are saying. I have been on the pill from the time I was 17, before I started having sex....just wanted to have shorter periods. But now at 27, I find myself 17 1/2 weeks pregnant. I never missed a pill, and was not taking anything other than vitamins. I took my pill when I brushed my teeth every morning!!! Now...we were not being any safre when we had sex. We did not use any other form of burth control...not even pulling out! I am not sure what it is...but I do know quite a few people who have had this happen!! I know I called all of my girlfriends...and said I was on the pill...BE CAREFUL!!!

It is possible to get pregnant while on the pill. Even if used correctly. It just depends when you ahve sex, some days are more fertile then others. ANd yes it says 99% effective, so what about that other 1%. its best to use a condem even if a woman is on the pill.

i got pregnant while on the pill, i took it correctly and still got pregnant!
you can still get pregnant on the pill because if you are ill or you have to take a different medication then the effectiveness of the pill drop to about 50%, so all the people you are talking about may have been taking the pill and not fibbing!!!!
