i put a cd-r in hooked every thing the way it is was suppose to but comp won't boot. what did i do wrong? not that i am a whiz at fixing things but how hard is it to install a cd ? it's a smart and friendly cd-r

Could be anything of a million and one reasons.

Try taking the CD back out and see if it boots now.

You might have zapped the motherboard with static.
You might have unseated the RAM.
You might not have hooked the power supply back up.

if you get a repeatly hit F2 or alt-F2 when you comp is firing up, to enter the BIOS. Look for boot devices and use the + and - buttons to change the boot order - it should really be booting from floppy first or cd-r then HDD second.

If you're not getting any startup screen at all check the master and slave settings on the back of your new drive - the HDD should be master with the CD-r as slave. Or set them both to autoselect and that should sort it. Otherwise its a bigger problem :)

Try booting up without the cd drive and see if it works. Does it even turn on (like can you hear the fans spin)?

when you installed it, did you set the jumper(small plastic block on a row of pins) on the back to slave? if it's on the same cable as any other drive, it will cause the computer to not boot
