There is no real answer for this. No one really knows for sure how the brain works. Some scientist have attributed our violent nature to genes. "Cave men" survived by being dominant. The strongest survived. Some have suggested that these acts are carried out by those of us who are mentally ill. Many think an imbalance of chemicals in the brain making some people have a tendency toward violence is to blame. Really anything is possible. One thing most of these scientist agree on is humans as a whole have a violent nature.

Great Evil does not exist without Great Good. Unfortunately few documentaries or news focus on the good people, it is humans curious preoccupation with evil that news and documentaries pander to. The baser, selfish, aberant, and ignorant instincts that most of society manages to rise above festers in some people and sparks their actions. People who do wrong know they will be famous for doing it. It is easier to be noticed for doing wrong that a life time of doing good. To justify killing innocent people you must come up with a reason and to be blunt, people who are different scare us and it is easier to kill someone we have no connection with. When the army trains our soldiers to kill, they focus on political and cultural differences, distancing the soldier from the person he might be asked to kill. Sociopaths do the same thing to justify the killing in their own minds.
