Mine loved Sandra Boynton books. Especially Snuggle Puppy; Moo, Ba, La, La, La; The Going to Bed Book and Barnyard Dance. (I really like the Belly Button Book too.) We've made up songs for all of them.
Peek-a-blocks and roll-a-rounds are good... stacking cups are great!!
I got a Little tikes xylophone/piano that's still a favorite at 11 months.
If you're thinking more expensive (and the baby is standing up) my daughter's FAVORITE toy for the past couple months is her Leap Frog Little Leapster Table. (~$40) We keep it in the kitchen and she plays with it while I make her meals.
And after all that Baby's just gonna play with the boxes... Merry Christmas!!

Any toy that stimulates the brain, just go to the infant section of any department store. They'll list the age ranges on the box. Toys usually range between $2-$60.

If you want an honest answer... Boxes covered in pretty paper.
If you want your child to have a gift I would do Weebles, blocks, or Little People stuff.
These will last through the toddler years, are affordable, realistic gifts.

My son is 8mo and is standing up, the leapfrog table is a good idea or anything strong enough to assist them in standing. I think sassy makes a set of mock electronics they might like, little baby cell phones with buttons and make noise.

At that age they have no clue so I would say clothes and a small baby toy. If you want to go bigger you could get one of those baby gyms.
