I'm looking for a book to give as a gift to a first-grader with advanced reading skills. I would like something with enough pictures to keep it interesting for her and vocabulary that will challenge her a little.

I would prefer stories about African or African-American characters, or at least with a good diversity. It would be great to find someting that she would want to keep, rather than outgrow...

Thanks in advance!

There are many African-American folklore collections and they are usually illustrated as well. Virginia Hamilton comes to mind. She had many collections published.

In the Beginning: Creation Stories from Around the World (Paperback) by Virginia Hamilton, Barry Moser

The People Could Fly: The Picture Book (New York Times Best Illustrated Books (Awards)) (Hardcover)
by Virginia Hamilton, Leo Dillon (Illustrator), Diane Phd Dillon (Illustrator)

Many Thousand Gone: African Americans from Slavery to Freedom by Virginia Hamilton, Leo Dillon, and Diane Phd Dillon

A Ring of Tricksters : Animal Tales from America, the West Indies, And Africa by Virginia Hamilton and Barry Moser

One-Hundred-and-One African-American Read-Aloud Stories (Hardcover)
by Susan Kantor

Um Hmm: A Feast of African American Stories, Songs, & Poems (Secrets of the World) by Ysaye Barnwell

What's the Hurry, Fox?: And Other Animal Stories by Zora Neale Hurston and Bryan Collier

And for a great picture book, I love Patricia McKissack's Goin' Someplace Special.

A great book for an advanced first grader? Try Arthur chapter books. In first grade my teacher let only the best readers in the class read these (at the time) challenging stories. The variety of characters makes for some diversity issues on a first-grader's level.

She'll feel smart and confident when reading these books, so they would be a great gift!

Go to BArnes and Noble or Borders and look at their childrens sections of books. There are glorious books. In my mind I would give her something beautifully illustrated even if its beyond her reading level, such as Dinotopia.
