How long has the diamond been the norm in western culture? And why don't more people know about it's horrible past and current history? Does anybody care that this industry is run by corrupt governments, criminals, and corporations? How can people that supposeovly hold marriage sacred use the diamond as a symbol of love when it represents all that is evil? And if you don't know the history of the diamond, shame on you for being so stupid!

spunk 113- These people did not die for you to make a profit, and your statement that what you do by selling over-priced diamonds to stupid people makes their deaths have meaning, you suck, you sound just like a jeweler. Yes, put them back in the ground, right next to all the corpses of people that died for this horrible gem.

Here are just some of the sites that try to explain the horrors of the diamond, and the people that continue to pay for this evil.

Diamonds are evil and I hate it too! It's just a piece of rock!

But you know something interesting, several people have told me that it was the Jews who controlled the Diamond industry during the turn of the Century, particular the large productions coming from Egypt and that they were in part responsible for marketing the wide popularity of them years to come!

Not my own opinion but that is what people have told me in classes I've had in Social Anthropology.

1) The history behind the object does not make the object in question evil.
2) The tradition of giving a diamond engagement ring is not merely to express love--for that, a guy could give anything. The diamond can signify wealth, or a willinginess to give the girl anything. It's an expression of the girl's worth to the guy.
3) Speaking as a jeweler, while I have no desire to encourage the horrendous behavior that's gone on, many people have been killed to mine the stones. Should we ignore what they die for, and let their deaths be even more pointless? The stones have been dug up, and they are quite beautiful. What do you want us to do? Put them back in the ground?

Rather than browbeat and lecture us, why not give us some sites to go to and explain why you feel the way you do, in question form?

I gave my wife a lump of coal and said as we grow older so shall the coal become a diamond. She kicked me in the nuts.
