How are asteroids detected in a long-exposure photograph that shows mainly fixed stars?

They will be seen as streaks or hairlines on a long exposure plate. This is because they move vastly faster relative to Earth than the so-called "fixed stars".

Take a photo, then take another one a few days later. Something move? Probably an asteroid.
