Yes its fantastic. You save money, and if you play the game right you won't need to queue for tickets. Oyster cards are also a lot more sturdy than their paper counterparts, so they are less likely to stop working, and more likely to survive being put through the wash.

Just watch, because from Nov 19th (a week today) you WILL be charged £4 for incorrectly using an Oyster (not touching in and out properly on each journey). You should ask a member of staff what this means. Its not at all difficult, but a lot of people seem to have trouble doing it.

Oh yes, yes yes.
I used to use the paper ones before, and about a year ago switched to the oyster card.
It's better than the paper cards for the following reasons:
1. It's cheaper, and public transport is in no way cheap in London, so I say the cheaper the better!
2. It's hassle-free. You put it in your wallet and touch the pads with the wallet itself. It's quicker that way, less chance of losing it or getting it stolen, and the queues at the oyster passes are way quicker.
3. You can top it up in advance: if you travel out of the zones specified in your ticket, you have to pay a little extra. With the paper one, the stupid machine will start beeping, a member of ataff will have to let you in, and you'll have to go and pay upon your arrival. With the oyster, it'll automatically deduct that from your topped up balance.

I can't understand why cheekyegg's comment has received so many negative ratings. The only reason you 'save money' with an Oyster card is because the price of tickets for individual journeys on London Underground (and buses) has been jacked up to ridiculous levels in recent years, and is set to go higher still.

TfL (the issuer of oyster) say as their cathphrase:
'It's always cheaper with Oyster'

this is true. as an example a single zone 1 journey is £3 cash or £1.50 on oyster.
at the weekend, the MAXIMUM oyster fare is £2
if you use it a lot during 1 day it stops charging you at 50p less that the one day travelcard.
i recommend it without doubt and is sooooooo easy to use.

it's great if you go out with out any cash and have topped it up before
also it's cheaper with an oyster on a bus you save 90p
each time and after you have used it up to £3 it turn in to a travel card automatically

It's AMAZING. I went to London for 10 days, bought a week-long pass and went almost anywhere I wanted. Much easier and definately worth the money.
