A friend of mine recently told me she had been unemployed and was running out of money. I told her "why don't you apply for social assistance ?". She said that she hadn't really worked enough in life and she'd feel bad about getting it. I asked her "Well, have you ever paid sales tax, income tax, etc........If so you have a right to it."
I re-assured her that the cheques are mailed out, you don't have to stand in line like the old days (and if they needle you about working just say that you are handicapped or were molested or something and are to messed up to work). She said that she'd still feel a bit bad about it but it was better than feeling bad from being evicted and hungry.

Do our taxes pay for welfare or social assistance?

Your friend is feeling bad to get help from welfare, anyone who is unable to make both ends meet and is broke, is eligible for welfare. Social Assistance is meant for that. She need not be on it forever, it is a timely help to take care of basic needs. She can surely get help from them for her employment preparedness. People on welfare are helped to go back to work, your friend can get help in facing interviews, applying for jobs and resume writing etc. Only a fighter wins, feeling sorry, or feeling bad takes your friend no where, it will affect her mental health. She need not lie that she was messed up or handicapped that she cannot work. That is being dishonest and Social Assistance eventually will investigate, and if they find out which is for sure, Then she will never ever get help because it will be on record.
People sitting are not fools, do not underestimate them and think your lies will work. Lie has no life. Your friend will be back on her feet soon and will do well, tell her it is a passing face.

Yes,they do. Tell your friend that assistance is offered to anyone regardless of their social or economic status. Go in person to the Social Security office and see what forms of assistance are available. Also,go to your local chapter of United Way who can refer you to the local Food Bank and church groups who give out groceries and clothing. If your friend is disabled or has medical problems, then the United Way can also put your friend on the Meals on Wheels list who bring meals to people who can't leave their homes. Good luck.

YES... and people who are not even from this country get welfare as well. Paying or not paying taxes by the individual plays no factor in it.

Yes our taxes that the hard working people pay do go to supporting those not willing to work.

Yes our taxes do support welfare. In the state I live in, you have to sign up to do community service and get into a state sponsored training program when you sign up for welfare. I believe most states have very similar programs.

Our taxes do pay for welfare and social assistance.

You do not have to have worked to receive them.
Illegal immigrants get some.
Your taxes do not have anything to do with it, it is need based.
