Cichlids, gouramis, angel fish are all good. You could try sharks...

Odd looking fish are nice, too. Like Brown Ghost Knife, or Black Ghost Knife.

Cichlids are great fish to keep.

They are hearty and learn to respond to feeding by hand and several of them are very colorful.

Just be careful and read about each species before you buy and introduce them into your acquarium. A few of them are very pugnacious and don't treat the others in the community very well.

Also be aware that they are "builders". They love to push the gravel around and/or move it in their mouths. Lots of times they will dig up plants or even undermine a rock so that it might topple over.

I raised both regular Chiclies and African Chiclids, but never had them in the same tank. I don't recall if that is recommended so you better do some research before you decide to mix them. Africans are quite expensive compared to regular Cichlids.

The only real warning I'd give you is if you decide you want Red Tiger Oscars be aware that they grow rather rapidly and they get really big. The pair I had were over 3 pounds apiece and putting them in a small acquarium WILL NOT stop them from growing.

Regarding buying small and upgrading; I would "upgrade" from the get go if I were you. Why purchase several acquarium setups unless you intend to have several of them in the house. My first acquarium was a 10 gallon and from that I went directly to a 70 gallon. It was great. I thought it was much easier to maintain once it was set up, and the temp and ph regulated. The temperature and the ph changed very slowly as compared to the smaller 10 gallon.

If you intend to go big in the end anyway, go for it up front. You won't be sorry.

Good Luck! Enjoy the Chichlids.

Angel fish are part of Cichlid family. They do get along with other fish, but can be aggressive at times. Gouramis are another one that are peaceful. Don't get Oscars unless you like them big. They will eat the smaller fish when they get to a bigger size.

I have kept cichlids since last year and they are a very nice fish but, they're are very agressive. The only problem I got from them was they are very hard to maintain and they're hard to breed.

But, GOOD LUCK! :)
