I'm trying to mend a pc for a girl I work with and when you turn the comp on, the XP logo comes up but then the screen just goes black, I have tried to start in "last known good configaration" and also tried safe mode. Both to no avail. Can anyone please give me any advice on what else to try. Thanks

Well, you can always download windows xp from limewire or http://www.bittorrent.com if you want; or you can buy it off ebay.

hi there , 1 : maybe you have changed the HDD with the other version of windows xp installed on , windows xp requires to detect the mainboard chip , when you're usnig another HDD it couldnt detect that chip so wont work !
2 : if you can reinstall the windows xp , you can backup your files in C: usnig ms dos !
3 : it might your hardware has some problems like burned RAM or your cpu fan has stop working properly , checkup them all ! at first you can remove one of your rams or replace it with the other one ! but i think its problems because of the notice # 1 that i said
4 : send me email if you cant make it , there is too many problems may your pc has !

This happened to me and also to my mate 2 weeks ago, you will need to restore the whole system using the disc, it will wipe of all files and installed programs, but if it gets the pc working again, its worth it. Theres no other way that you can do it im afraid, this seems to be quite a common problem. Hope this helped xx

Good answers. I agree with the others however I'll add a few things.
You will have to wipe it and re-load. However, if there is data on the hard drive you need to get off, build yourself a windows PE disk. You can get instructions on how to do it here...
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
Those instructions will help you create a CD-ROM disk that will boot the PC into windows, regardless of the condition of the hard drive.
Create the PE disk on another PC, boot the faulty PC on the PE disk. That will give you access to the hard drive and network. Provided the file system is good on the hard drive, you will be able to copy files off before you wipe it to re-load.

Sounds like the graphics card is not configuring. Might even have died. Put the card from your own machine in it's place and try that. I know some dodgy techs who will say the MOBO is fried when it's just the graphics card at fault.
Good luck!

I agree with kelly d. Try reinstalling the operating system from disc. Hopefully that will work.
