I am not sure some of the other answers realize that Canadian, and many Europeans get a full year (or more) at 50% (possibly topped off by employer) of their wage. I am a stay at home mom and my husband was able to take some of the time as parental leave, he had the option of 48 weeks off, topped up to 97% by the Canadian Forces. Maybe the problem is that the people of America do not know what to ask for from their employers. If you all stand together you can move mountains.

I honestly think that the major corporations who give any kind of maternity leave just don't understand the need to be with your child the first few months. America has slowly pushed the family ideals out the window and replaced it with work, work, work or you're lazy. There are a lot of jobs which don't offer any kind of maternity leave.

I think that America has a really good maternity leave and is pretty long. Compared to other countries, there is virtually no maternity leave.

Because society has not caught up to the fact that a majority of women have to do everything. We work, clean, shop, birth, and raise the kids, just to name a few.. Women are doing the man's job and the woman's job all at the same time. Society still assumes the traditional 2 parent home as the norm when in fact it is not. And yet we are critisized when it is not done to perfection. Women always have and always will get the shaft. And this happens in almost every culture. Sorry I must be having a bad day, I have noticed all of my responses to questions are very cyinical this evening, but true for alot of women.

My company gave me a leave of absence, but I didn't qualify for FMLA leave because my company hasn't been open a year. Sucks the big one, I have no guarantee of a job when I come back or anything. All I can do is hope they don't fill my position any time soon. I am high risk and on bed rest, not due until February. I am glad hubby has a decent job we get insurance through, otherwise we would be screwed.

I'm on maternity leave right now, my only complaint is the insurance's don't pay you enough to be off. I think 6-8 wks is plenty. Of course unless you're dr feels your body is not ready to go back to your normal doings. I've been off for 2 wks, I FEEL like I'm ready to go back, but know my body's still healing inside.

It is not America's faul, it is your employer who makes the regulations for maternity leave, not every job has the same amount of leave. I think you are very lucky to even get leave! So don't complain.

We don't have bad maternity leave here, if you want more time off take it but don't expect everyone else to want to pay you to do it.
