In many cases, Democrats who were elected didn't win so much as the Republicans lost. I'm sure there are quite a number of candidates who would not have been elected if people had not been so thoroughly fed up and disgusted with the all-Republican congress. Electing Democrats was the only way to get checks and balances back into the system. Voting is how Americans conrol the behavior of elected officials. It's slow and awkward but it's better than nothing. If this bunch doesn't work out we'll do it again. That's why the idea of a "permanent majority" is so appallingly contrary to the principles of American democracy.

Actually, Mr. Web did NOT win. Mr. Webb won. And he won because more people voted for him than for Mr. Allen. It shows that THIS year, the majority of Virginia voters were more intelligent or sober than in the past.

Because the smear campaign worked. George Allen is a great man. Jim Webb was a Republican and supported Allen until this election. So really it was Republican vs Republican. Allen would have won if he hadn't been accused of being a racist.

1. Allen ran a stupid campaign. 2. Bush did not announce Rumsfield's firing before the vote. 3. The scandals in the Republican Party. 4. People wanted a change and the Democrats put forth a moderate enough candidate to eliminate the differences between the candidates and then it came down to the items mentioned above.

I'm not from Virginia, but I wonder that myself. I'm also wondering if the people who did vote for him are going to rue the day they cast those votes.
