Hello everyone,

I am looking for an idea for a musical at my school. I am looking for a small scale musical, with a small set, and at most 8-10 cast members. I also want it to be more of a soft ballad style, nothing too crazy. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sean

Hmmm... well Little Women is a good musical with the right amont of parts and good if you have a lot of strong female singers which is pretty typical in theatre in general and it has a few good male roles as well...
Into the Woods is another great musical with good parts, it's just more challenging vocally.
Another great musical in Finnean's Rainbow, the only problem is an irish accent is needed for three of the main roles, but if you have actors who can do it then it is an excellent choice.
Chess is also a great musical with a smaller cast and beautiful songs and a simple set
Side Show is another fabulous musical with a smaller cast, but the set would be a little challenging, but there is probably some adjustments that could be made to make it more manageable.

Can you tell I love musicals? lol. Anyway, happy hunting and good luck on your musical!

Soft ballad musical? For high school... not too many of those out there. Most musicals are built around choral pieces. Passion by Sondheim is edgy, but beautiful. Secret Garden is probably do-able with a small cast. Godspell has a small cast but it's not ballad-like.

Little Shop of Horrors... You might be able to compress My Fair Lady.

Urinetown is pretty edgy - contemporary - but not bad.

How about a story of Stephen Collins Foster?

When I hear the words "soft ballad", first thing comes to my mind is the composer, Foster. I just love the songs he wrote.

Our school is doing Grease this year. We did it a few years ago as well. It was fun =)

You could do; Pajama Game, Pippin, Once Upon a Mattress, Fame, Gypsy. I wouldn’t suggest Oklahoma or Westside Story. They’re both too overdone.

Also I would wear like flats with the dress, or red heels. Umm if you dont have dark brown hair, get a dark brown wig, thats curled. Or if you do have dark brown hair, then curl it! Hmm... I dunno, the only thing I can think of is "A Chorus Line", but then again, I'm listening to the music, so that might explain it.
