I would recommend self-publishing. I self-published a book of poetry through http://www.lulu.com/ (you don’t need an agent for self-publishing)
Lulu is completely free and very easy to use. You can then buy a global distribution, or ISBN, which will put your book on Barnes and noble, borders, Amazon.... I really like lulu, I think they are great. They also offer a great customer service if you get stuck. Once published with them, you automatically get the copyright, and you keep all rights to it. You can have books printed in b/w or colour, hardback or soft back, and in a variety of sizes.
If you think they are too good to be true (which was my original opinion) you can view my book at http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
Hope this helps. Good luck with your writing.
For any more information about Lulu you can contact me at forensic_dreamer@hotmail.com (if you do contact me, put Lulu in the subject line, or I might report as Spam)
Cheers, Deanna.

I've never had anything published, so I really couldn't give you any of the details, but here's some general info that might help. Many colleges and universities publish their own books. Sometimes they do this just for their own faculty, or for "scholarly" works, but they will also publish for independent authors. Your best bet is if your book is nonfiction (even better if it's the sort or work that could be used in a class), but many college press do publish independent fiction, poetry, collections of essays and stuff like that.
If that doesn't work for you, there are small publishers that are commonly called "vanity publishers." Besides publishing books that they think will sell well, they will also print up smaller quantities for anyone who is will to pay for it. I don't think it costs all that much, but I've never gone through the publishing process. Try Yahoo-ing the phrase "vanity publishers" to see if there are any of those outfits in your general area. Good luck...you'll never know how good your stuff is until you get it in print for others to see.

I think your best choice would be Lulu.com They have outstanding customer support, and there is no fee to publish. They print your book on demand once you upload a file (like a Word document) and have them convert it to PDF (at no charge). Their quality of materials is better than Cafe Press. They have a free gallery of book covers, or you can use your own artwork. There are a lot of helpful people at the message boards who will help you too. Their prices are based on how many pages your printed book is. You can do an e-book completely free. I have been very pleased with them.

Try cafepress.com. They don't charge ANYTHING. You decide what format & size you want, upload the book in PDF format (provided by them) and they do all the printing, binding, marketing, etc. You choose a price and they take a flat fee, from $5 to $15 (I think), based on the size of the book. It's a GREAT way to do this with no investment. You can market the book yourself as well.
