I mean w/o the ^ sign. It's called calculator talk here and isn't allowed.

type ^x

^ is called a "caret" and it is typically above the 6 on your keyboard. It is generally understood that ^ indicates exponent or power.

If you're in Microsoft Word or something like that, you can type it, and then highlight what you want as the exponent. Then, with that highlighted, hit control-shift-+. That will raise it up to the superscript position. Hitting just control-= will lower it to a subscript position.

You can also highlight the character and then go to format-font, and superscript is one of the options you have.

But on some place like this, I think the ^ is the best way to indicate a superscript.

Well, I don't know but you can always do this:
Let's say "x"=5. Now you want to know 4 to the xth (5th) power. Easy as cake!

4(4)4(4)4

Oh yeah! by the way, if you don't know how to put that carrot thing on the keyboard how did you type it in?

^x

The carrot (^) indicates that it is superscript...

so, 5^x is 5 to the xth power.

If you can't use ^, you could use ** instead, which used for exponentiation in some programming languages. It's probably not as widely recognized as the caret, though.
