you don't normally. just throw it away and pick up another or a half doz for about 1.25 each and replace it.
b sure to read the size on the old filter b4 discarding.
few filters in forced-air systems have cleanable filters...if so, blow out with air gun in the opposite way of the input.
there are those that are also cleanable by water like swimming pools. let dry and reuse.
just know what type yours is....

if it is a black colored filter than it is washable
just use a garden hose and wash opposite side of the arrow.
you can use a drop of dish soap if you wish
then lean the filter on its corner and let it drip dry for less than a half hour, reinstall
if its white with little circles, throw away.
i recommend the pleated style filter if yours truly isn't washable
if you'd like to add comfort, energy savings and health then you should have a humidifier installed. because to not have is against all that there is (when it comes to having a hot air furnace).

If it's an electrostatic filter, you just wipe it down, like those air cleaners on TV. If it's a HEPA filter, replace it when required or your furnace can get messed up.

Most of them are disposable treated white paper. Just chuck it and spend a couple of bucks on a new one for another year.

it's probably much less of a hassle to buy some more, they're fairly cheap, and cleaning them is not all that effective.
