this is very simple; The Great Gatsby was written to point out the the weakness of the morally bankrupt (the extremely wealthy) and the philosophical divide between them and the middle-class and poor; the extremely wealthy (the top 1/10000ths after the stock crash of 1929) lifestyle never changed; they remained selfish, inward gazing, do nothing wastrels during the entire depression while those around them starved to death. There was nothing mythological about these people; they were very real and their sufferings and lack thereof were very real. The poor and formerly middle class were reduced to begging, bowing and scraping and having to completely forget their pride and abilities in order to feed their families. While a great many of the very wealthy got richer, became more selfish and blind to the suffering around them than they ever had been. I was never keen on the book, but its message was very clear.

If your school or library subsciptes to it, the Gale Thompson Literary Resource Center has some excellent reviews, as will the Encyclopedia of Literary Criticism.
