Go into "Safe Mode" first, then do the defrag thing. Don't know how to start computer in "Safe Mode"? Ask, and I'll tell you.

What do you mean you tried it but it doesn't work? Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and select Disk Defragmenter. Turn OFF your screen saver during this time, as it will loop continuously if you leave the screen saver running while defragging the disk. Make sure you select your hard drive (usually drive C) to defrag. Once it starts, go away for a while. Read a book, watch TV, visit with your neighbors, etc. Depending on the size of your hard disk, this can take from 30 minutes to several hours, especially if you haven't defragged before.

You do know how to turn off your screen saver, don't you? If not, before you start the defrag process, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display and click on the top tab that says Screen Saver. Set the selection to None. Do this process again after the disk is defragged.

Hi,

Always clear your cache and temporary files with a program like windows cleanup:

http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html

Step 2:

Reboot the computer press f8

Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Step 3:

Type defrag c:/ on the command line and it let it defrag your
entire drive.

(This may take awhile)

It's the most optimal way to defrag the hardrive.

This will show you how to schedule a defrag check
once a week on your computer!

Good luck.

It should work unless the program has become corrupted. If you haven't defragmented your HD in a long time it takes the program a long time to finish.
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

If you have already tried to run the defragmentation program, and it will not run, you're going to need to delete some files off of your computer that you no longer use, the defragmentation program requires some area on the disk to run. Once you have freed up about 5% of your hard drive try running the defragmentation program again.
