Hi, I have a pet guinea pig that I purchased a few months ago. It is a male Abyssinian. I currently have it on its own, and would like to purchase another one so that it does not get lonely. I certainly don't have the time or money to deal with guinea pig babies, so I was thinking of getting another male.
I've heard that 2 males together isn't necessarily a recipe for disaster, but I was hoping to get some more input. Also, is it ok to house 2 different breeds together?
Thanks.

I have two male guinea pigs together, father and son. They don't fight. However, they have a spacey cage. They have a playpen. If you get a roomy cage they will do fine together. When they first meet the one that is already owned by you will mount the other to show dominance. Do not be worried-the dominate one will do this for a few hours. If a fight starts to arise, wait until they back up to regroup. Then grab a towel and pick up one of the piggies and put him somewhere else. Both piggies will be mad for a few hours at the least, so leave them to cool off. If they do fight, get them two waterbottles, two food dishes, and you should have two houses anyway for them, even if one is a shoebox. Good luck wit your piggies!!!

Well I new a lady who bred these for pet and show.
She had them in a family atmosphere with a few females and the "buck" she wanted to father the babies. In another setup she had the young males etc.
I had guinea pigs as well and had three males in the same cage with no problems. I bought them from her. Of course it may depend on the guinea pig? Put them in a big cage with plenty of pipe (they love the PVC pipe to hide in and to play). Guinea pigs are family oriented...
When purchasing the next guinea make SURE the pet store person knows what they are doing with sexing. Just because someone works at a pet shop and can regurgitate (you no they read something and can tell you what they read but they act as if it came from there own head) what they had read does not make them good at sexing!
When a kid I had a very good side business breeding hamsters. It was not hard work just go to the pet shop and pick out the pregnant females (pet shop employees can be rather ignorant at sexing). I took these home they had babies and I would sell them for like a buck a peice.....Then of course I had my own I bred....

well male guinea pig sometimes get along but mostly they get along only if they were bought together and in the same cage at a young age if you really want your guinea pig not to be lonely bring hom to the pet shop pick out a guinea pig he likes let them to know eachother then they may be best buds but if they fight a little buy another cage and put one of the guinea pig in it and set the cages next to eachother after a while they may get along!

My experience is that if you bought one way before the other- the one you had first will be very territorial and will fight the new guinea pig. They will fight and injure each other big time. I have two guinea pigs, but are in separate cages. This way they communicate with each other, too.

yes, males are actually not as mean to each other as two females are when you put them in together. The females most of the time are vicious towards each other if let alone, but the guys will just hang out (not as horomone driven as the females).

Yes, if they are just friends. Your guinea pig would enjoy a friend!
