I have also seen this and I think it is EXTREMELY stupid policy. I tip based on the service of MY SERVER. When I don't know who my server is, I'm a lot less likely to leave a good tip and generally just leave the standard approx. 15%. When I have a single server throughout my meal, I almost always leave a better tip, even if the service isn't that great!

It's called teamwork, and we have no choice. When an order comes up whoever is closest takes it out. Servers have more than one table. If the kitchen waited until the specific server was there the food would pile up in the windows. It's the way restaurants work and as long as you get your food correctly and hot, why does it matter who brought it. Your server should show up asap and make sure everything is ok. As for the guy who says he tips less because of this policy, he is just a cheap s.o.b. who will use any excuse to gyp a server out of a wll earned tip.

Unfortunately, if you have never worked in a restaurant, you have a hard time understanding everything that goes into "service". Your server has other guests as well as yourself. They may have 3 other tables. So they work on a teamwork system. They want everyone to be successful including the kitchen. Hot food is their first priority and served by the first available employee. Trust me, somebody is tipping out the food runner.

At some restaurants, they actually have food runners whose only job is to ensure that food hits the table hot and as quickly as possible. Servers work as a team, and try to help each other give good service to their guests. Everybody in the restaurant is trying to make your experience as pleasant as possible, not just your server. Just because your server may not drop your food off to the table doesn't mean you shouldn't compensate them as much. They're working hard, trust me.

Being a restaurant manager, I believe I can answer your question. At most restaurants, the servers work together, so when a food order is ready in the kitchen whomever is not busy at that moment will deliver your food. Thus, you get your food when it is hot and fresh. Good customer service.

the food runner is not a new concept. it makes it much easier for the guest. if you want to actually wait on the server, who also has 4-5 other tables at minimum your food would be cold. these runners are there for prompt delivery. youo should be thankful for them. they are tipped out generally 10% by the servers.
