if you listen to emo music, are you emo? can you say that someone is emo just because he/she listens to emo music?

I listen to emo, but I also listen to stuff like classic rock, punk, alternative, rap, etc... Do I consider myself emo? Sure, but I also consider myself lots of other things as well. I've never met a person whose entire life was consumed by only one thing, therefore labels are often incomplete and don't give an accurate depiction of the entire person.

I don't think it's wrong to call yourself emo if you strongly identify with the music and the culture. It is much more than just a genre of music as some people say, because an entire cultural scene has developed because of the music. That's like saying that the music of the 60's was just music and dismissing the massive impact it played on the society of the times. No one would really do that, because most people realize the significant link between music and culture.

So basically, whether people call you a nerd, jock, prep, emo kid, or whatever... They really have no idea of who you are as a person, because they've pigeon-holed you into a set category that doesn't describe everything about you. And if they haven't grown passed doing things like this, then they probably have no idea who they are either.

But there is no denying that there is an emo culture, which takes more into account than just the music, so if people choose to identify with this culture, theres nothing wrong with that.

No you can be a total prep but still like emo music. In my opinion to be emo, you have to dress and live emo. However you explain that.
