"Rap is something you do, Hip-Hop is something you live"

To rap is to do just that, talk. Hip-Hop is the name of the movement which covers the clothes, music, art and politics.

It seems that a lot of people here are a kinda confused. Since I assume you mean "what's the difference between hip hop music and rap music," here's the straight answer...

"Hip hop music" and "rap music" mean virtually the same thing. However, some people associate the term "rap" with the more mainstream variety of the genre (which nowadays often includes R&B or pop elements) and reserve the term "hip hop" for the variety of the genre that stays closer to the roots of hip hop music (i.e. - speaking on social and/or political issues, storytelling, bragging about one's lyrical skills while roasting another MC, etc.).

But to be really specific, hip hop itself is a culture. Rap music or hip hop music (specifically, MCing) is just one element of that culture. The other elements of the culture are graffiti, breakdancing (aka - breakin'), DJing and a more recently added element, beatboxing.

Rap is just random while hip hop is somewhat more of an art.

Also hip hop by deffinition uses electronics, while rap doesn't need anything.

As others have said, hip hop is more dance, and another both are bol***ocks. Techno-remix and Bachata dude here (love rock and other music from Spain, though from what I understand of the words they are no more or less moral than the lyrics of hip hop in English).
Said someone on another board: Both symbolise the lowness to which music can aspire, a level where talent gives way to violence, crime, and debauchery!
For me, though hip hop isn't all that bad by comparison.

Nothing really but hip hop doesn't have as much rapping as rap music. And usually, rap has more profanity.

Hip Hop is a new development of Rap. The topics and the lyrics are becoming more sharper, they tell more about a sexistic term, a sexual desire, pornography, a social gap between rich and poor, War-Gangs and a violence in the poor ghettos.

Source MTV: Most of them are the nasty black artitsts who want to get more young girls than any other artists of other music genres.

the prejudice is making me sick, excuse me while I go vomit ... consult someone who knows about hip-hop. for example, don't ask me about country music, b/c since I don't know about it, I wouldn't be giving you a very good answer.

check out these Obie Trice Lyrics:

... and pompous white folk think I'm just rhyming
Just designing lines, just for the sake of shining
Like I just speak violent applying to the business I'm in
Rewind and find him in a dirty *** hood with no sight of climbing
Moving on up was just The Jeffersons
Rest of us watching the tube got less then them
So why you vexing him? Why you stretching him out?
He got the weapon all because his whereabouts
Born and raised, mental slaves
And I don't see change before I'm seeing the grave
All I see is my homies corpse decay
Crying at his wake, can't recognize his face
Face it, you not identifying with me
My identity distorts ya visibility
So you can't see me, peep what he's achieving
You recieve information from TV
I'm in the hood, I live it you read about it
Rest in peace Peezy
Please believe Obie eyes've seen The Wire
Prior to what you seeing on the screen
