My car struggles to accelerate, think about the Flintstones as they ran and ran and the car stayed put for a few seconds before it started going anywhere. My car jerks when it should be accelerating. But if I push on the gas hard enough for the transmission to change gears, then it is fine. You can imagine how frustrating it is to follow behind someone who is constantly changing speeds. MY QUESTION IS: what's wrong? Is it something that needs to be fixed? Is it possible to shift to a different gear to get it going, then switch back to overdrive?

I'm not wanting to take it to get it fixed because I have no money, so if this is something that doesn't need fixing, then I don't want to waste any money (that I don't have).

It sounds like you are losing hydraulic pressure somewhere. This could be caused by low transmission fluid, or the intrenal transmission components have worn out (clutch packs, bands etc.). I'm sorry, BUT YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. It's going to cost you money one way, or another. If you don't have the money to get it fixed right now, park it, and wait until you do have some money to fix it. It doesn't sound like it's going last you any more than a week, AT MOST.

If I read this correctly you are in overdrive and trying to accelerate,I don"t know what you are driving but most cars can be locked out of overdrive for city driving. If you try to accelerate in overdrive you must push the pedal down until it down shifts. That sounds like what is happening. As to the jerking I would guess the engine is misfiring due to a spark plug problem. I don't know if I have diagnosed your problem but from studying ypur explanation this is what I guess is the situation.
If I am correct then you have no problem.

Well have you checked the fluid leval? If it is really low on trans fluid it will act the same. Also if it has a stoppted up filter it to willl act this way.
If the fluid level is full. Pull out the dip stick and look at the color
Red or slitly pink OK
Brown or black NOT GOOD MEANS TRANS IS GOING OUT

Ok now smell the fluid teansmission fluid has a plastic smell
IIf it smells like burnt tost the trans id fryed and time for a rebiuld or a replacement.

LETS START WITH THE BASICS CHECK THE TRANS. FLUID LEVEL THIS SHOULD BE DONE WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AND THE SHIFTER IN PARK IF YOU DO NOT CHECK IT RUNNING IT WILL LOOK LIKE THE LEVEL IS OK BUT WHEN IT IS STARTED ALL THE OIL GOES TO VARIOUS PLACES AND IT MAY IN FACT BE LOW DO TRY CHANGING THE FLUID AND FILTER WHEN YOU REMOVE THE OIL PAN TO GET TO THE FILTER YOU MAY FIND A LOT OF METAL MEANING THE TRANS IS BAD WHEN YOU REFILL IT GET A BOTTLE OF TRANS RENEW FROM THE AUTO PARTS STORE ASK THEM FOR IT THEY'LL KNOW WHAT YOU'RE NEEDING THIS STUFF HAS ADDITIVES IN IT TO SWELL THE SEALS IN THE CLUTCH PACKS AND YOU MIGHT GET A LITTLE MORE RUNNING TIME OUT OF IT AND OF COURSE IF NONE OF THAT WORKS MAYBE YOU CAN ASK A TRANS SHOP IF THEY CAN GIVE YOU A FREE ESTIMATE FOR REPAIRS BEST OF LUCK TO YOU
