depends what country you live in
though i would suspect it is illegal in most countries.
They should just put "return to sender" or "not known at this address" and put them back in the post
better still get your mail diverted it doesnt cost much

Either call or go speak with the Postmaster at your previous Post Office, and request that no more of your mail be delivered to your previous address. Even though you have put in a formal change of address form (before you moved), there are always going to be some things that slip through. Ask the Postmaster to hold any further mail at the counter for you to pick up. Secondly, ask him about filing a formal complaint against the person who is opening your mail. It is a Federal violation, as it pertains to Postal law.

if you live in the uk, there is no law against anyone but a postal worker opening your mail.
i had a similar problem but the person opening mine was an ex landlord. i tried to sue but it just cost me money to find out i could not prosecute as he had not broken any laws.
sorry the only two things you can do is write to the new occupiers or visit them and ask them not to open it or,
you can redirect any mail from the post office to your new address by contacting your local sorting office, it does cost a small amount but it's worth it.
no matter what anyone tells you it is not an offence, i have tried really hard to get my ex landlord arrested/prosecuted or in some kind of trouble. it didn't work. i paid solicitors, nothing could be done.
if you live in America, i don't know the laws, sorry.
good luck, i share your frustration, i hope you get it sorted soon x

They are breaking federal law. Call the post office and inform them of this violation. Call the companies who are sending you the mail and make sure they have your new address.
Also make sure to ask if they are asking these people to open your mail. I've had this happen as well. I kept receiving mail from a bail bonds company for another person. I finally called them to inform them of the fact this person did not live here any more. They had me open the envelope to get the file number.

If you filled out a change of address card, the mail should be forwarded to you . third class is usually discarded or returned.
call the postmaster
File a compliant on this person, if you have told them not to open your mail and they are still doing it.
tell the person to just write forward on it, put your new addy on it and stick it back in the mail, but to stop opening your mail!!!

In the UK you are protected by the Royal Mail Act as only the addressee can open the mail, by law! You can report this person to the police as it is an arrestable offence.

Get your post redirected, you can get the forms from the Post Office.
If she keeps doing it, call the police, it is against the law. If you are worried about possible identify fraud with regards the credit card applications, contact the credit agencies Experian and Equifax and keep monitoring your credit rating with them.

call the post office and tell them what is going on, this is a federal offence. I also think you can request that no *junk* mail in your name can be delivered there. That person should be writing on the envelope that you are no longer at this address.
