i would say seriousness and dedication to your project. Even (especially) if your doing a comedy. Does your movie NEED to be made? Can no one else do this movie but you? Would you sit and watch the finished project (when it IS done) with your friends and family? If you don't think so, then its time to do a different project. These are things I think about when I make a movie, and they help filter ideas and plots all the way to the last editing to help me make the best movie that I can. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

if you want to make an amatur film look professional, with the multi million budget, here's a few pointers
1. make sure you know what your doing. always have a script handy so if the actors fluff their lines, you can remind them of what they should be saying
2. storyboard your script - this helps when it comes to framing your shot.
3. get a decent equipment. a bog standard home video camera can only go so far. you may need to spend up to 1000 for a decent camera. you don't ven have to big a large camera a hand held works just as well.
4. learn how to edit. anyone can point a camera, and film stuff. the the real mark of a good film is the editing. find a good editing programm, and learn how to use it well, and you can make a decent film, including soundtrack, cast lists, and movie idents.
5. bbe passionate - if you reaaly want to make a goodfilm it will show, by the amount of effort you put into it. a good team, can produce a great film
