Turbo-jet engines rely solely on expanding gas to propel the craft to which it attached and uses huge amounts of fuel . A turbo-fan engine uses the jet to turn fans that are routed through ducts to propel the craft. It doesn't take near as much fuel to turn a fan as it does to make the "jet".
