You can still keep going without a contract on a month to month basis. Contrary to popular belief you are not stuck with the original plan you enrolled with, if there is a less expensive plan that meets your needs you can go with that at any time during your contract term or afterward, talk to customer service about other plan options. Do not agree to extend your contract, you do not have to, they will still provide you with monthly service. Your contract only requires that you maintain service with that provider for set length of time. If you get another phone from them at a discount price you will be required to agree to another contract period. The phones cost more than they charge you for them when you sign up, so a contract protects the provider from incurring major losses.

That's a tough one, if you change to a different plan with Sprint/Nextel, they're gonna stick you with a new 2 year contract. Back when they only did one year contracts, I wouldn't contact them-I didn't want to change anything, because I wanted to leave it open if I wanted to change companies. But I doubt your bill will lower automatically, never happened for me. Not sure about using the phone with other plans, don't know how they work that. Just search around all the plans etc. and see what's the best for you. If your happy with your current service/plan, don't do anything.

You can continue on the 75$ plan without a new contract but if you get a lower plan you will have to sign a new contract. I don't know about using the phone with another company.

Yes you can as far as I know. But you may want to renegotiate with your current provider. You should make sure that part of your monthly charges are for the phone itself because I have never heard of such a thing with a cell phone company. You always have to pay for that upfront.
