My daughter lives in Alaska. All you have to do is move there.

Alaska is just another state. US citizens can move here and work here any time they wish.

I moved to Alaska in 1993 and love it. The main thing you need is a positive, can-do attitude. The winters are very dark and cold, and this gets some people down. One way of dealing with this is to socialize -- a lot. Be ready to make your own fun.

It surprised me how conservative Alaska is. This state is dominated by big oil with lots of our workforce coming from Texas and other oil producing states. If you are politically liberal, be prepared for disappointments at election time.

The saying is you have to go 50 miles outside of Anchorage to get to Alaska. Anchorge is a fairly large and fairly modern city, so anything you need for living up here can be obtained here. We even have opera. Fairbanks is "unpretentious," meaning it still has a little feeling of being a frontier town. Juneau is a pretty little tourist town, and the state capital. Rural Alaska includes many Native villages with no road access, a surprising diversity of indigenous cultures, and seemingly complex economic and political issues.

The beauty of the Alaska wilderness still puts me on my knees, and it is very accessible. It is not unusual to have a moose in the backyard or the occassional bear in the nieghborhood. It really is a sportsman's paradise. However, Alaska is dominated by spruce and birch, and I often miss the hardwood forests of upstate NY. Southeast Alaska (Juneau) is a rain forest and has a lot of diverse vegetation.

Are you an adult US citizen? If so, you don't need any special permit to be up here. Do you homework first before you come up to AK to stay. Visit in both the Summer and the Winter. Secure employment here and move on up.
