Hallmarks are made of three things the purity (how much gold there is in the thing based on parts per thousand) the assay office the sample that the thing was made from was tested and whether or not it is gold or silver. 375 is 9 ct Gold 500 is 14 ct gold 750 is 18 ct gold 975 is 22ct gold and it accepted that anything between 995 and 1000 (usually 999) is 24ct or pure gold.
950 on silver is Sterling silver. The assay offices are anchor for Birmingham, Lioness for London, The rose is for Sheffield and the three castles is for Edinburgh. Other things to consider is that there will be a date letter for the year in which the item was assayed. The crown will signify it is Gold but the lion is for Sterling silver. Other marks are just the makers mark usually consisting of two letters.

There is one exception to this and that is Gold sovereigns are not assayed as they are legal tender and a coin of the realm belonging to the crown (For the legal tender bit they are only worth £1.00 (one pound) in cash and it is unlawful to refuse this coin in legal tender. But I wouldn't want to spend a coin worth £100 in gold value for a quid in any shop!

It's a tad complex, so you really need a reference book, which tells all.
Fundamentally, though, don't buy anything with a "385" stamp.
It is 9ct gold, and therefore three/eighths gold - the rest is crap metal mixed in.
A picture of a lion either to the left or right is good, but heck - I am ranting and not a pro.
My "bling" is unhallmarked, bought in the Mid-East, but is, I am told by my Goldsmith freind, pure 24ct.
It is extremely bendy.
A way to check a diamond is to scratch glass. If the glass is knackered, but the stone isn't. then OK.
A real pearl will feel scratchy on your teeth, a fake or cultivated one will feel soft. Emeralds & Rubies are to be wary of - too easy to make false ones.
Silver is only valuable if it is crafted into something interesting,
The bulk value is not much.
Get a book with all the pictures of hallmarks in. Available in or on order from any decent bookshop. And a magnifying glass.
That will help you no end.
All the best,
Bob.

I could explain this but there is a lot of detail, so instead here is a link that expains everything you'll need to know.

I will say this though. You probably are not aware that the British hallmark is the oldest form of consumer protection in the world and dates back to the 14th century.
