People lie for two reasons. They are ashamed, or they do not want to take responsibility and face the consequences.

They fabricate stories because they feel that their life seems boring to others, and they are seeking approval.

They fabricate stories beause they do not want to admit to poor choices they have made.

They lie because they know their behavior lacked integrity, and do not want to face consequences.

When someone lies and says they wanted to spare your feelings, they hope that you will just acceot that. They are actually blaming it on you, because they are afraid of the consequences. They are insulting your intelligence, and disrespecting your coping skills.

Lies are based on shame and fear. Lies demonstrate lack of integrity. Most of us are aware of when we are being lied to, especially when we really know someone. 90% of communication is non-verbal, and liars give off subtle clues that they are unaware of.

Liars don't change, unless they "get it". They cannot be changed by anyone but themselves. They only "get it" when they can illustrate, in their own words, what effect their lies have on others, as well as themselves.

I don't know if anyone really knows for sure. My thought is this, that most people don't believe that the truth is interesting enough and therefore, choose to exaggerate the facts to spice up what is being told. In the instance of actually doing something wrong, most people panic and feel that by lying they can avoid being condemned for their wrongful actions. People are strange creatures and while there are a select few that will choose to tell the truth, the majority will take their chances of not being caught and tell the lie. Maybe we should return to instilling the virtues of "honor" into our children....something is missing in society today...could it be "truth"?! I don't know.

Because "some" people haven't figured out yet, that it takes a lot more energy to lie than to just tell the truth. A lot of those people don't care, until someone lies to "them!" And then, "some" people no matter what, they never do learn. You can't force a person to be truthful, either they are, or they aren't.

Some people lie as they are not confident that the truth is interesting enough to other people.

Obviously people lie to cover things up.

Also a sign of mental illhealth and drug abuse.

It sure helps them feel creative! All jokes aside, the need to exercise creativity could be a motivating factor for some people's lies.

they just don't care enough anymore to try and tell the truth and work things out. A lie is easier.
