Each layer of the atmosphere can be considered to be a thermal resistance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_resistance_in_electronics

Therefore, the surface temperature can be considered to be the equilibrium of energy input vs. energy output through those thermal resistances. So what happens if the thermal resistance is reduced?
