Coldest air temperature I've seen was -30 in Wisconsin. Breathing through your nose hurts, and you can feel ice crystals forming in the breath. Coldest I've ever felt was in the Arkansas River in Colorado in May. Water temp was 42.

WINTER NORTH ATLANTIC... I never got around Russia where things really get cold.
I once fell into the river Dovey in North Wales - February '51 That was cold and wasn't helped by the fact I had to walk a mile to get some dry trousers. But in the North Atlantic, the sea water actually gets thicker due to its temperature. Next time you look at the load lines on the side of a ship you will see for yourself, one of the lines is clealy marked WNA, the ship sits higher out of the water by a couple of inches!!!!

Downtown Chicago, February 1959, coldest I have ever been.
It was ok as long as you had a building to break the wind, but man o man, when you got in the wind, it cut right through you.
Don't know how cold it was, but had to be below zero.

Christmas Eve 1983 in Chicago. Morning low was -25 with winds of 29-41 MPH resulting in wind chills as low as -82. There was ice on the inside of our windows. Nobody went out for Christmas because they were all afraid that the cars would break down and we'd freeze to death.

South Pole in January of 1996. Got as cold as -55C while I was there. That said, I was not all that cold thanks to good preperation, low humidity and winds that rarely topped 20kph. The c-c-c-coldest I have **felt** was in William's Bay Wisconsin about a month later. I vividly remember smiling and my teeth hurt.

Spokane, WA, February 1999, I thougth I would die. We were camping and I was told to use two sleeping bags, but I didn't want to roll it back up in the morning, so I used only one. I have never been that cold again in my life. That was the longest night of my life.

In a bedsit aged 19. My gas bottle had run out and it was freezing! I put on two pairs of pyjamas, two pairs of socks and my dressing gown. Laid all my coats and anything else I could find on the bed and got in. I was still cold and cried all night. Bad memory.
