Do not listen to anyone who may say Hollister, Abercrombie, American Eagle, Aeropostale, Wet Seal or Forever 21 because those stores only carry cheap-quality clothing.

I recommend J.Crew, you can always buy something on sale.
Also, there's Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy.

I was buying my own back to school clothes for the first time this year, so I was really trying to budget my money, and I ended up buying almost all my clothes from Old Navy. I thought they had nice stuff similar to what I'd seen in other places, but for a much better price.

Marshall's, TJ Maxx, and other stores like those. They have major brands and designer names for a fraction of the cost. The difference could be it was from last season or it could have been overstock. i.e. I found a beautiful Tommy Hilfiger purse I had just bought at the mall a week later at Marshalls for less than half the price. Shopping at these stores gives you a classic "more for less" advantage.

make your own. you can also find great buys at thrift stores and give them a new look. I used to get stuff from delias or alloy for my daughter but when one company bought the other, the prices went way up so I stopped purchasing from them
