Can a person who is illiterate, unable ro read & write, receive a driver's license?
I was at DMV and noticed many people from foreign countries taking their DMV test & I know you cannot take the license test with assistance. I wondered how this works with our road signs being in English; if someone is able to simply read the unwritten road signs, is that enough? Which brought me to the question, how does someone who speaks English but cannot read & write receive a license? Or can they?

Let me re-clarify: I was speaking of those at DMV who 'currently' don't speak English, like some of my family, friends, some of my students, my patients & staff also. Thank you for your answers.

I posted this question before. Some people were confused by the term illiterate. For my question today, I'm referring to those who cannot read & write. Sorry if I confused you. This is a sensitive question, I have a family member who is illiterate & would like to receive his license...I'm looking for help and SENSITIVITY. Thanks to those who are being helpful ! Greatly appreciated! Smile.

They take an oral exam, but they do need to understand our signs.

Absolutely. And what is even more important is that, that person is then considered a highly qualified, and coveted, commodity with a bright future as a bus driver for the DNC. Imagine driving a bus full of your peers to endless protest rallies in the off season, and to various voting districts on very busy election days.

first your wrong you can have the written test read aloud to you if you can't read. also some states offer the test in many languages their is also an oral test on the computer for those that can't read as for the signs all you really need is to remember the shape, size and color and the word or picture you don't have to know the word just it's meaning

road signs are also shapes and symbols. If a person can show that they understand these symbols they can take an oral test and recieve a drivers licence from the DMV.

Thank you for clearing up the term "illiterate" for me. Do you think we are all ignorant? And yes, one can. They give the test orally. BTW...because one cannot read or speak english, it does not make them "illiterate" it makes the unable to speak or read english.

I was kind of wondering that as well. My mother has had a stroke and can't read. What concerns us so much because sometimes she's ok and they might clear her to drive, but then out of nowhere she's confused and dislexic, and jumping curbs, and we don't think she should drive.

I suppose the "foreigners" you see know English. Are you surprised by this? You sound judgmental.
