remove the remains.... then if it's a non porus surface, scrub the whole area (up to three Ft away for larger animals) well with hot soapy water and then dry off, bleach and it should be OK.

For porus surfaces (plaster etc) the same rmoval and scrubbing, then after the bleach has dried you may need to deal the porus surface with something along the lines of Ronseal brick sealer, or a polymer varnish... this will hold any lingering odour inside the surface. If youre in an upstairs room, remember the smell may permiate the surface and the odour will escape down into the room below (dead mice birds etc), so you may need to seal the other side of the surface too.

If youre on wood, as above, but use wood sealer.

Make sure the animal is removed first! A solution of washing powder and bicarbonate of soda will break down the enzymes and help eliminate the smell but may need to be done more than once. A good strong scrubbing brush too, a cloth is no good.

Catch a bluebottle fly. Empty the room you suspect is above the corpse. Release the fly. Watch where it settles. This is where the dead animal is. Lift the floorboard and remove the corpse.

As long as you're sure you're not living in John Wayne Gacey's house and that it really is an animal, you need to get the body removed and disposed of. Try any pest control company.

Would this be under the house? You would have to hire someone to go under your house and drag the dead animal out. Memo to give the person a large heavy duty plastic bag and he may need to wear a clothes pin on his nose....This happened to one of my cats....
