It's mostly a lack of vocabulary. For example, one of my children once asked me if I was "cracked." I had to give it thought before I realized he meant "broke" as in have no money.

The youngest child of someone I know once told the school that he got scratched by "dog needles." He doesn't speak clearly and the nursery school thought it was "drug needles." Of course, the sheriff was called...... There was nothing to find.

So it's better to ask and ask them to draw or act it out as well..

Because visual gives them more of a hands on(for their minds) rather than more of a compreshension of words (for the mind)
most of the time, pictures can work better at getting the point across to little kids, but they should always be able to express their anything through words first

Young children have not developed the sophisticated abstract thought it takes to express things in symbolic language; in fact they can't even represent their feelings to themselves sometimes. But a drawing is like a dream, letting you express things at a purely emotional level with simple, intuitive symbolism.

Sometimes they don't have the words, or are uncomfortable expressing them...it can be tough to look at someone and say something that is hurtful or embarrassing to you...it's easier to look at a piece of paper and concentrate on what you are drawing there, and pretend everything around you, doesn't exist.

It works because they have a hard time talking about things that bother them, while they can express themselves MUCH better in pictures. They don't exactly know the words they want to use to say what's bothering themselves....poor unfortunate souls.

Because children's brains are not done developing and they have difficulty discussing abstract concepts. Therefore, drawing allows them to communicate images and to access the right side of their brains which is easier for them to communicate via pictures...

Young children may not have confidence in their language skills to feel comfortable communicating. Their imagations on the other hand are so natural to them.
