DONT go to the dos Prompt and type C, because it wont work. you cant format a drive that has the existing operating system youre using.
If you slaved the hard drive to another computer and typed format e: everything INCLUDING the operating system would be erased
You could remove all the installed programs by using ADD/REMOVE programs but that wont erase the data, temp files, cookies, or possbily a virus and spyware you might be trying to get rid of.
If you have the restore CD, thats your best bet.
Or if you have a full version of an operating system, then you could format and reinstall just operating system..mission accomplished.
But cleaning everything...well thats alittle more tricky
Remove all programs wil do only part of it.
Destroy all the data folders
Clean out the temp files, cookies, history
But the stragler files that arent where they normally should be could still be there.
so its a tough question since you are trying to keep your O.S.
Id do the above mentioned if restore CD is there, or if you have full version operating system

U cannot do it in one shot.
U need to goto the Add/Remove Programs Option......
(If u don't kno how to find it follow these steps:
1. My Computer
2. Double click the "Settings" folder(Win 98) or (Win XP) U have the Option called "Add/Remove programs in the Left Pane", some where on the top.
3. Click on them.
4. A window showing all programs u have, will appear.
5. U'll have to click on each program and click the Uninstall option.
Note: Be VERY CAREFULL OF WHAT YOU UN-INSTALL. It might be ur Viedo software or ur Modem software or something very important, u un-install.
)
Hope this helps...
U can also try a google search to solve ur problem, by getting some software to do ur job.
Or enter the search criteria in these sites:
www.download.com
www.softpedia.com
All d BEST

do you need to just remove programs? or is this a matter of cleaning up mistakes?
Add remove programs, or even rollback will accomplish a simple reduction.
Re-installing windows from the CD (choose format) will give you a seemingly clean hard drive, but most of the deleted files will still be there if the hard drive is examined forensically.
To completely clear the hard drive, use a program like SHREDDER, then re-install.

You would have to buy a software suite called " WipeDrive 3.0". Make sure you un-check the box in the program that states "Wipe Operating System". It can be used with Microsoft Windows, DOS, Linux, and Unix.
